Hold to the Rod

For those of you that know that song...you won't be able to get it out of your head while reading this post. ha. February 15, 2012 nearly ten weeks after breaking his collar bone, the six inch threaded rod came out. It was a happy day. Kade could not wait to get that thing out of there. The rod had served it's purpose. It helped him heal quicker and allowed him to play basketball his Senior season. Because Kade is so skinny, the rod broke through the skin early January, which it wasn't intended to do. It now became an external fixator appliance, just like the 4 he had in his femur when he was 7 years old. It was disgusting. We had to clean it every night with saline to keep it free from infection and keep it covered with guaze. He was also on a heavy antibiotic the remainder of it's stay. The nasty volcano growth thing is the body's way of protecting itself. Pretty amazing. Because the rod had broke through, the Dr. was able to take the rod out in his office, saving us big bucks. Plus Kade didn't like the effects of the general anesthesia. Kade said the rod coming out didn't hurt but for whatever reason he wasn't numb for when the Dr. was stitching him up. He said he was dying, but didn't want to complain. Holy Smokes! . Senior Night CHS Basketball 2012
